Stretching Creativity

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

You’re a creator, designer, artist extraordinaire! It’s likely you painstakingly plan out your color combinations, ribbon type, design ideas, and of course, clay selection, but…

When it comes to effectively explaining in precise and articulate detail what you do or what your business is about, How do you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10? This is where we get introspective. And in case you’re thinking, Yanira, is this even important?

YES, It’s more than essential; it is vital! And if your response to “What does your business do?” question is: “I make hair bows” or “badges” or “I own a handmade craft shop,” I can somewhat relate (because that use to be me), but allow me to share another perspective that might serve you better while increasing your customers.

Let’s take a stab at unpacking the million-dollar question: “Why would a customer choose you over a competitor?”

Fact # 1: There are tons of hair bow designers and badge creators currently in the creative space.

Fact # 2: If the majority is “Selling badges made by hand” or “hairbows made to order,” then you have an ENORMOUS opportunity to capitalize on their ineloquence—and your customers will love you for it.

Case-in-point, when you’re able to offer potential customers a clear, authentic, and relevant reason to the question of “Why?” The response is overwhelmingly positive. Moreover, you can begin to build long-term customer-serving relationships—that grow your business.

When a prospective customer asks me what I do, I typically respond with: “MyClaynation has championed the values of artistic creativity and entrepreneurial empowerment of bow designers, badge creators, and DIY crafters by offering a large variety of in-stock clays from around the world,”

It’s authentic, exciting, and full of clarity. But I am not boasting. Nooooooo! My response did not always read so well. However, I invested the time to think, write, and capture the meaning I felt within, which helped express my desire to champion my customers through products (clays), service, and support. Notwithstanding, English is my second language—which means you are probably a better writer than me.

So, whether you’re new to the creative industry or a seasoned pro, this is one of those action steps that are worth your time, attention, and effort. Make your “Why” a masterpiece that brings clarity to your customers and endears them to the incredible hand-made work that you produce. You’re an amazing soul with beautiful talent. This is your win; take it!

Thanks for reading me! -Yanira ❤️
